The Starlight Symphony Orchestra will begin their 2013/2014 season on Saturday, October 5, 2013 at the Hays Performing Arts Center, 979 Kohler’s Crossing, Kyle, TX at 7:00 pm; and on Sunday, October 6, 2013 at the Chapel in the Hills, 14601 Ranch Road 12, Wimberley, TX at 3:00 pm.  This concert will be the first conducted by the new Music Director, Dr. David Oertel. The performance features four significant composers, Mozart, Sibelius, Mendelssohn, and Dvorak.  It begins with Mozarts’ delightful “Magic Flute Overture.”  They then move on to the luscious string presentation of Sibelius’ “Andante Festivo.”  The first half of the program ends with the triumphant and proud “War March of the Priest” by Mendelssohn.  And finally, the second half of the concert is the passionate Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” by Dvorak.

The SSO is a regional community orchestra, based at the Hays Performing Arts Center in Kyle, TX, whose mission includes providing Central Texas musicians with a cultural and social gathering opportunity where players can meet and work together. SSO also serves to provide opportunities for Central Texas students to play with an orchestra, giving them the experiences of working with a conductor, learning a part, playing with a full complement of instruments, understanding orchestral literature, and performing for the community. Just as important in this age of dwindling budgets, the orchestra preserves the heritage of instrumental music from historical literature to contemporary compositions.

This concert and all SSO concerts are open to the public and free; however donations are appreciated to meet the expenses associated with their performances.  You can learn more about the SSO at their website (www.starlightsymphony.org ) as well as sign up for concert notifications.  Come out and show your support for our local volunteer musicians.
